WHAT DOES RAW MEAN?
There are currently no official labels or third-party regulations for a food to be marked as raw, but the generally agreed upon standards to say something is raw is that it has not been heated above 118F/48C. Seeing the limitation in such narrow definitions we use the term to mean food which has been processed with these temperature barometers in mind, but also which uses heat above these numbers, when required, to increase the nutrient availability of the food being processed. For example eating a piece of rhodiola root straight from the ground provides close to zero nutrition-it is largely indigestible. Extracting the root however in boiling water allows the tough indigestible fibre to be broken down and the amazing compounds in rhodiolla (such as rosavin) to become available for utilisation by our bodies. Conversely, hemp and chia have very delicate Omega-3 oils that degrade with heat and light. In this case we are stringent around sourcing these particular foods where they have been processed at, and where possible below, the raw temperature of 48C. In conclusion RAW to us means food with maximum nutrient density and availability. Sometimes this involves greater heat, other times less.
ARE YOUR PRODUCTS ORGANIC?
Yes and no. While we have no official certification from the Soil Association each and every one of our ingredients are sourced from organic farms. We can provide proof of purchase and full traceability for everything we buy for those wishing to see more closely.
WHAT IS A SUPERFOOD?
A relatively new category of food no exact definition exists yet of what a superfood is or whether they even exist at all as a real food group. Based on our own extensive research and experiments this is what we currently understand the term to mean. Superfoods are nutrient dense foods which digest fast and easy in the human body. They replenish our cells with key nutrients missing in the modern diet helping our cells to function more efficiently. Simply put this translates for you as more energy, better skin and happier, smoother, more stable moods.
WHAT IS AN ADAPTOGEN?
The term adaptogen (from the Latin word 'adaptare', meaning to fit or adjust) was coined by Soviet scientist, medical doctor and pharmacologist Nikolai V. Lazarev to describe substances that help the body resist and adapt to chemical, physical or biological stressors. A simple example to understand this is that of rhodiola (one of the adaptogens contained in Chocolate Pulse) and its effect on exercise performance. When we exert ourselves physically we put our bodily systems such as our muscles and organs under greater stress. Our heart has to beat faster, our lungs work harder and our mitochondria output more ATP (energy) to deal with these increased physical demands. Each person will have a unique upper limit with which they can maintain this state of high intensity before their bodies give up and are unable to perform at this level any longer. With adaptogens such as rhodiola though our capacity to go for longer at this intensity is increased due to rhodiola's ability to affect the amount of oxygen available to our cells - more oxygen equals greater energy output. Rhodiola then is seen as an adaptogen as it helps our body adapt to the increased physical demands and stressors placed upon it by exercise.
ARE YOUR PRODUCTS GLUTEN FREE?
Again yes and no. None of the ingredients we use contain gluten, nor are they processed alongside gluten containing ingredients. A special certification, much like organic, is needed though to guarantee therefore we cannot put the gluten free symbol on our products nor can we guarantee 100%.
ARE YOUR PRODUCTS SUITABLE FOR VEGANS?
Chocolate pulse is free of all animal products and so is suitable for vegans. Our honey, obviously, is made from bees which are animals therefore is not suitable for vegans. Dates or coconut sugar are great vegan alternatives though to honey for sweetening your Chocolate Pulse if you are vegan.
ARE YOUR PRODUCTS SUITABLE FOR VEGETARIANS?
YES! Everything we use in our products is vegetarian friendly.
ARE YOUR PRODUCTS PALEO?
YES! Our products are perfect for those dabbling in and adhering to a Paleo lifestyle as they contain many important nutrients and phytochemicals that even the most thought out paleo plan will be missing. They work perfectly as and adjunct to your paleo lifestyle to fill in these missing nutrient gaps.
DO YOUR PRODUCTS CONTAIN NUTS?
No nuts are used in, or alongside, the manufacturing of our products. Again though because they have not been certified or tested we can not make any claims on our packaging. Chocolate Pulse does contain coconut which although it has the word nut in its name is actually botanically a drupe and not a true tree nut. Saying this some people with a nut allergy still react to coconut so please do a test before consuming large volumes if this concerns you.
DO YOUR PRODUCTS CONTAIN SULPHITES?
Absolutely no! No preservatives, thickeners, or other fillers or additives are ever used in our products. This means so much to us that we even source our adaptogen extracts from companies who don't use excipients (flowing agents) in their manufacturing process. Aside from their destructive nature to your health we want you to be getting what you are paying for and what your body actually needs - 100% food and herb with nothing else added.
CHOCOLATE PULSE CONTAINS SALT. I THOUGHT SALT WAS UNHEALTHY?
Salt has been wrongly vilified over the years. When health ‘experts’ condemned salt they forgot to differentiate between the refined, dangerous, highly processed form and the healthful, unrefined version. We use the latter which is simply dried by the sun and wind on the coast of Portugal and packed by hand. With over 60 trace minerals our salt is the usable kind which our body needs daily to perform key process's and functions.
WHEN I MAKE CHOCOLATE PULSE IT ALWAYS SEPARATES AFTER SOME TIME. IS THIS NORMAL?
Yes this is completely normal and desirable. There are no artificial preservatives or thickeners in our products - this is why the separation occurs. We wanted to keep it pure and natural, no watering or diluting down of the ingredients so you get more taste and more value for your money. If separation happens just give it a quick shake and it will come back together.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO USE CHOCOLATE PULSE?
For best results follow the Chocolate Pulse recipe on the packet and then keep this nearby to drink throughout your day whenever you get hungry. Chocolate Pulse also works great in your porridge, protein shake, green smoothie and superfood bowls. Even adding it to less healthier foods will do wonders to keep you fuller and nourished for longer (meaning less snacking) due its broad and deep nutrient profile.
HOW LONG WILL CHOCOLATE PULSE LAST ME?
If following the recipe on the back of the 500g large size packet and having a 2TB (15g) serving per day then you will have just over a one month supply. This is a months worth of food and roughly 9 litres of chocolate in total which is a LOT of food and great value for money. If choosing the smaller 100g size then this will work out at a weeks supply which equates to around 2 litres in total of chocolate.
WHAT DOES CHOCOLATE PULSE TASTE LIKE?
If you follow our recipe chocolate pulse will come out like a deep, flavourful chocolate milk with vanilla ice cream undertones. If you had Nesquik chocolate milk as a kid and enjoyed it then you are in for a real treat! Alone the powder is quite bitter due to the many medicinal foods it contains. The sweetener must be added to transform it into a more delicious and familiar flavour.
I AM GOING TO THE BATHROOM MORE WHEN I DRINK CHOCOLATE PULSE IS THIS NORMAL?
Yes this is normal and desirable. Most peoples diets are so devoid of fibre and water that their digestive capabilities have almost slowed to a dangerous stand still. Chocolate Pulse is a rich source of both, so naturally will help bring your elimination back up to speed. If you have constant watery stools and recurring digestive upsets when drinking it then cut back to a half, or third of the dose until your body can recalibrate and gets used to these new foods. Just know that their will be turbulence to begin with due to many of your past lifestyle choices finally having a chance to be cleared away. Celebrate letting go of the old and welcoming the new!
THE HONEY HAS A STRONG PUNGENT SMELL IS THIS NORMAL?
Yes this is completely normal. Most people have never experienced a truly raw, wild honey. This is how they should smell. The deep, dark smell, taste and colour is a sign of its authenticity and rich mineral profile and the result of the diverse fauna which the bees have been gathering nectar from in Zambia.
IS VANILLA ESSENCE THE SAME AS VANILLA POWDER?
No. Absolutely and categorically not! Vanilla powder, made from whole ground vanilla beans, has more than 250 organic compounds that comprise its distinctive flavour and fragrance. Synthetic vanilla essence has one organic component-vanillin. Thats it! There is no comparison between the two in terms of taste, nutrition, effects and aroma. Never compromise. Always go for the real thing and know in doing so you will be consuming the only edible fruit of a family (Orchid) 20,000 large, which takes up to three years to produce just one pod, which is hand pollinated and which adds a flavour to food that no synthetic product can ever match. Never accept imitations!
IS CACAO A STIMULANT? DOES IT CONTAIN CAFFEINE AND WILL IT GIVE ME THAT MID MORNING CRASH LIKE COFFEE?
There is a persistent myth that Chocolate contains caffeine. Chocolate actually contains theobromine which hails from the same chemical class of compounds as caffeine - the methylxanthine class. They share a very similar chemical structure, which is where the confusion arises, yet they perform quite differently in our bodies. Theobromine works in a much gentler and milder way to caffeine in its ability to stimulate our central nervous system meaning a smoother, more stable and balanced focus and alertness than what coffee and caffeine delivers. With cacao there is the clarity and energy coffee provides minus the dirty neurotic buzz that many report when ‘on coffee’. Further, the fibre in chia and coconut and the adaptogenic herb blend work synergistically to slowly release and balance the slight stimulation that theobromine provides. In short all this means any ‘negative’ over stimulation of the central nervous system by cacao is minimised to almost nothing.
WHY IS MY PRODUCT SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FROM ORDER TO ORDER?
We are working with real food which is at the mercy of the seasons and the changes in geography and topography of the area in which it was grown over the duration of a growing season. Sometimes the rain will fall more in the highlands of Peru meaning the maca will be harvested earlier changing nuances of flavour and colour in the root. Other times the sun has been particularly warm in the forest of Zambia stunting the growth of the wild jasmine resulting in the bees sourcing nectar from other more prominent flower species. Nature is in constant flux therefore we cannot guarantee, nor do we ever want to, offer a standardised generic version of our products. What we can offer is our desire and commitment to consistently seek out the best and most powerful foods. The weather - this unfortunately is out out of our hands for the time being.
WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE OF YOUR PRODUCTS?
As a general rule of thumb chocolate pulse will last up to a year and and a half after manufacturing. After this time nutrient content will begin to degrade. Many benefits are still to be found if you do decide to consume after this point though. With our honey while we have to put a date on it by law in actuality it will last indefinitely due to the inability of any outside bacteria being able to take over in honey. Honey thousands of years old have been found in Egyptian tombs still in perfect condition - this is the true antibacterial power of honey. If you are unsure about the best before date and want to check just flip the packet over and it will be on the back.
